C Che’s Review of Dead Island: Operation Zulu (5 Stars)

This is definitely going in my desert island reading list. An almost perfect blend of action, humor, and terror. The zombies are nasty and hungry, the heroes and villains are badass but not invulnerable superstars (spoiler….. the women are just as badass as the dudes).

I would love it if Mr. Gambia would continue with this group of compatriots in other adventures.

So go ahead and read this first installment – we think you will like it!

Our Zombie Novels are Free for Kindle Unlimited Subscribers

Our Zombie Novels are Free for Kindle Unlimited subscribers!

Check out both Zombie Killing Stoner Episodes on your Kindle Unlimited subscription.

When C. Che and I first heard about Kindle Unlimited, we were fascinated and both subscribed immediately.

Why?

Well, we love independent, self-published authors (being that ourselves) and we love to read a lot on our Kindles. Since Amazon is actually paying authors whose books are enrolled in Kindle Unlimited, we figured this would be a great way to read tons of great books and support or colleagues.

Plus, since our books are enrolled, we wanted to see what the user experience was like.

As usual, the user experience is seamless. We can read up to 10 books at any given time, and then return them to get more.

Authors are paid as soon as a reader makes it past the 10% mark of the book, so it is a fair deal for everyone.

And it’s only $9.99 per month!

So, what are you waiting for? Zombie Novels are Free!

Support independent authors and subscribe to Kindle Unlimited.

And of course, check out Zombie Killing Stoners Episodes One and Two!

Why We Support Amazon

Why we support Amazon

and why we think every author should.

Over the past couple of months there has been a lot of news regarding Amazon and their fight with Hachette Publishing. Authors lucky enough to be making money with legacy publishers have tended to speak out for those businesses, including Chuck Wendig and Scott Turow.

But there is an even larger group of authors like us, and like best-selling J.A. Konrath, who see how much Amazon has done to level the writing and publishing playing field. Konrath has a unique perspective, since he bought himself out of his contract with Hachette and has been making more money with more freedom publishing directly with Amazon.

Hachette vs. Amazon

Amazon asked Hachette to lower e-book prices to put them more in line with most ebooks on Amazon.

Hachette said no.

Amazon asked again.

Hachette said no.

So while they were negotiating, Amazon took away pre-order buttons and stopped stocking Hachette paper titles in case they end up not agreeing.

The big issue here, however, is ebook pricing.

Hachette authors, who only get 25% or less on ebook sales, support Hachette on this.

Amazon authors, who get 35-70% on ebooks, depending on price, support Amazon.

While they work this out, Amazon offered to co-fund a pot of money to pay the Hachette authors 100% on ebooks.

Hachette said no.

This is not an issue of the giant Amazon stepping on the little guys.

This is an issue of the former giant publishers not being happy that self-published authors like C. Che and me make more money on an ebook than their contracted authors. And that pisses off their authors too.

Turow sits there wondering why we should be getting 70% on a digital sale when he gets 25%. I get it, I really do. But I wonder why he doesn’t buy out of his crappy contract.

Readers should support Amazon, since they are pushing to lower ebook prices.

Writers should support Amazon, since they allow you to self-publish, maintain rights, set your own price, and earn up to 70% (we earn 70% on our ebooks).

Publishers should support Amazon, since they make it easy for readers and authors to buy and sell books.

Even with Kindle Unlimited, an author gets paid once a reader reads more than 10% of the book. Even with Amazon Prime (One Year Membership) borrowing, we get paid per borrow, always more than 50% of the price we set.

Lots more folks are writing and publishing now, opening the field to so many of us who were either turned down by legacy publishers or just knew enough not to go there.

Keep in mind that the big publishers have been busted by the US government for artificially maintaining high prices through collusion. They have had power and would like to keep it.

For all of these reasons, we support Amazon.

New Amazon Reviews – 5 Stars

New Amazon Reviews of ZKS Episodes One and Two Give It 5 Stars!

It is always exciting to check Amazon after doing some Kindle free days to see if any new reviews have cropped up.

Today is one of those exciting days! We have a new 5 Star review of each Episode!

Thanks to reviewer Liz Long

For Episode 1: Rescuing the Samoan Princess

It is a short book, but it left me wanting more. The lead characters are well prepared thanks to their job in the security field. One of them is a drag queen, which is well done, IMHO. There are nice details like a custom-made dress dummy for Polly included in the story, but it feels like a natural part of the story. This whole episode definitely feels like the set-up for a series, so just know going in that you won’t get closure. But that’s why it’s “episode 1” not “the whole story”!

OK, so they didn’t hire a professional proofreader – the reality is that indie authors usually can’t afford it. It’s still a fun book!

And for Episode 2: The Coming Storm

Really, it’s hard to find something different about the Z.A. This book manages to do that. As we learn early on, the building is quite secure from anyone outside getting in. It’s the first time I’ve read a book with a true safe space in Manhattan. Seeing how they keep it safe, especially given the hazards already locked in with them, and move forward should be a fun ride. This book also introduces new characters and stories from outside their building to start making the world a little fuller. I’m looking forward to seeing how they all intersect.

So if you haven’t read them yet, go now! You will be so happy you did.
